This year this day falls on the 27th of November. This day varies year by year according to the fall of this Ashtami thidhi. This year the thidhi ashtami falls on early morning at about 05: 44 A.M in the morning. The celebration begins right from there. The day usually marks the celebration of the first child of the family who is supposed to be the forbearer of the family's responsibilities. This festival is celebrated in Orissa and in many southeastern parts of West Bengal. The entire state will be colour lit during this festival. Prathamastami 2021 Significance

This day is specially celebrated to mark the forerunners that is the eldest son/daughter of the family whom that culture believes to be the responsibility bearers of their family and who can safeguard the traditions of the family once the elders die. Maternal uncles, who is supposed to be called the blood relations of the son/ the daughter. They will gift the child with clothes and eateries and bless them with best wishes.

Prathamastami Puja Vidhi

  • Before celebrating the eldest kid of the family, every other woman in the family make their offerings first to the Goddess Sathi Devi.

  • This is followed by arthi and Dwajaha. 

  • The mother compliments her and wishes her pleasure and wealth on this day, to the eldest kid and she/he is dressed in new clothes.

  • Podhunwa is the name given to this procedure.

  • During this festival, a special variety of Peetha called Enduri is made by wrapping it in turmeric leaves.

  • The maternal uncle is now in charge of holding the eldest child, according to Odia tradition.

  • This celebration promotes social and family bonding, as well as discipline and ideal sense, because the eldest kid bears the brunt of the family's obligation after the father, and so it is the primary goal to celebrate it.

Prathamashtami Puja Rituals

The most significant ritual is that before honouring the eldest kid of the family, all the women including the eldest in the family prepare the prasadh that is needed to be prepared. The prasad is made out of a batter that is stuffed inside the turmeric leaves along with jaggery and the coconut and is steamed for a perfect cooking. This is offered to the Goddess Sathi Devi before that is to the kids. Once it is done after arathi, the kids are then honoured and celebrated. It is a part of the custom that the kids visit their maternal uncle's home for the feast.
