Pongal

Pongal, also known as Thai Pongal, is a multi-day Hindu harvest festival celebrated in South India, mainly in the Tamil community. According to the Tamil solar calendar, it is marked at the beginning of the month Thai, which is usually around January 14. It is devoted to the Hindu sun deity, Surya, and coincides with Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival celebrated across India under a variety of regional names. Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, and Maattu Pongal are the names of the three days of the Pongal celebration. Kaanum Pongal is a fourth day of Pongal celebrated by some Tamils.

The celebration is called after the ceremonial "Pongal," which means "to boil, overflow," and alludes to the traditional meal made from the fresh crop of rice cooked in milk with jaggery (raw sugar), known as kheer throughout India. The prepared sweet dish is first presented to the Gods and Goddesses, then to the cows, and last to the family members.

Pongal Rangoli Kolam

The Kolam is much more than an aesthetically pleasing art form. It represents pleasure and wealth. Here are some examples of Pongal Kolam designs. The Kolam is made up of dots and lines that form a significant pattern. While the Kolam is drawn in most South Indian houses throughout the year, it is extremely important during Pongal. Though the designs vary in different parts of India and are known by different names, the underlying idea remains the same. The patterns are geometric and well-proportioned.

The Pongal Kolam Sankranti Rath (chariot) is a traditional Pongal Kolam. The rath ropes are meant to be left open until the next day when they are linked from home to house to represent a common desire to accomplish an unbroken cosmic cycle. Line kolams are created by freehand drawing lines to create a geometrical design. Dots are put in a certain order and sequence, and these dots are connected to form graphical patterns. The Kolam may be created using a number of materials, including rice powder, rice paste, marble powder, colorful powders, leaves, and flowers. A grid of dots numbered from 4 to 108 is often used to design a Kolam.

Motifs may include lotus, fish, birds, and other symbols that represent the union of man and beast. The majority of the patterns are circular, conveying a sense of infinity. The sun, moon, and other zodiac signs are also frequently used as motifs. Edibles such as rice flour, pulses, and leaves are commonly utilized in the preparation of a Kolam. Colors were previously generated from natural dyes, but synthetic dyes are now utilized in a variety of brilliant colors. Colored sand and even flowers and petals are among the other components.

Plates with the designs engraved and holes supplied are available. It is simpler to make a Kolam when this is loaded with Kolam powder and tapped on the ground.
