In Treta Yuga, there was a king named Kitravirya. He had many queens, but none of them was able to give him a son. So, with a desire to have a child, the king and his queens went to the forest and started performing penance. In the forest, queen Padmini once approached Anusuya and described their plight and agony. Anusuya suggested queen Padmini observe Ekadasi during the Adhika month to propitiate Lord Vishnu who will clear their sins and bless them with a child. After this, queen Padmini observed strict fast, and throughout the night she kept vigil listening to the glories of Lord Vishnu.
