History Of Naidoc Week

Before the 1920s, Australia Day was celebrated on January 26 to express their protest against the treatment of Aborigines in Australia. Later in 1935, William Cooper, the founder Australian Aborigines League, drafted a petition to King George V seeking special Aboriginal electorates in Federal Parliaments. Australia Day in 1938 is considered the 'Day Of Mourning' due to the march laid by the Protestors in Sydney. Late in the year 1956, Major Aboriginal organisations, state and federal governments, and several church groups all supported the National Aborigines Day Observance Committee (NADOC). In 1974, the NAIDOC committee was composed entirely of Aboriginal members for the first time. The following year, it was decided that the event should cover a week, from the first to the second Sunday in July.

The committee then became known as the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NADOC). This new name has become the title for the whole week, not just the day. Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week. The control and the management of NAICOC were taken over by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission in the 1990s from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Patricia Thompson and John Paul Janke are the Co-Chair Members of Naidoc Week.
