Nag Panchami is observed during the Shukla Paksha Panchami in the month of Shravan. It is celebrated on the fifth day in Shukla paksha and falls in the month of July or August. Usually, the festival falls two days after Hariyali Teej. Nag Panchami is the traditional worship of serpent Gods and is a popular festival in India and Nepal.

Nagula Panchami Vrat

The day is celebrated by taking one meal on Chaturthi and keeping a fast on the next day, i.e. Panchami. The next meal is eaten only after closing the fast. For Puja, the image or earthen idol of snake is used. Items like turmeric, vermillion, rice, and flowers are offered to Nag Devta. Then a mixture of raw milk, Ghee, sugar is offered to the idol of Nag Devta. A puja and aarti is performed for the Snake God, and at the end, the worshipper listens to the Nag Panchami Katha.

Nag Panchami Puja Vidhi

On this auspicious day, pictures of Nagas (snakes) are placed on the door to keep off the evil away. Food like milk and honey is placed in fields for the snakes. Some people also roam on the streets wearing demon masks. The festival is mainly celebrated by married women. They get up early in the morning, take a bath and offer puja to the snakes. Live cobra or idols of the cobra are worshipped. Milk is the most common offering, and some portion of it is brought back as Prasad. Flowers are immersed in the milk, which is applied by women on their brother's backs.

सर्वे नागाः प्रीयन्तां मे ये केचित् पृथ्वीतले।

ये च हेलिमरीचिस्था येऽन्तरे दिवि संस्थिताः॥

ये नदीषु महानागा ये सरस्वतिगामिनः।

ये च वापीतडगेषु तेषु सर्वेषु वै नमः॥

Mantra Translation - May the snakes who are staying in this world, sky, heaven, sun-rays, lakes, wells, ponds etc., bless us.

अनन्तं वासुकिं शेषं पद्मनाभं च कम्बलम्।

शङ्ख पालं धृतराष्ट्रं तक्षकं कालियं तथा॥

एतानि नव नामानि नागानां च महात्मनाम्।

सायङ्काले पठेन्नित्यं प्रातःकाले विशेषतः।

तस्य विषभयं नास्ति सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत्॥

Mantra Translation - The names of nine Nag Devtas are Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padmanabha, Kambala, Shankhapala, Dhritarashtra, Takshaka and Kaliya. If their names are chanted regularly every day in the morning, it will protect you from evil and make you victorious in life.
