Moontype Band

Moontype is a Chicago, Illinois-based indie rock band. While attending Oberlin College, the group began as a solo project with simply vocalist Margaret McCarthy. Still, it then evolved into a full band with guitarist Ben Cruz and drummer Emerson Hunton. McCarthy debuted as a solo artist with the release of Fan Music, her first EP under the Moontype moniker. Bodies of Water, the band's debut full-length album, was released in 2021 on Born Yesterday Records.

Margaret McCarthy, Ben Cruz, and Emerson Hunton met at their small college music program, but their friendship didn't blossom until they relocated to Chicago. McCarthy released sparse, bass-driven tunes as Moontype, and the concept quickly evolved into a trio with Cruz on guitar and Hunton on drums. A few songs on their remarkable debut, Bodies of Water, are reworkings of McCarthy's 2018 album Bass Tunes, Year 5, which he released after graduating in June of that year, and much of the album reflects on the changing nature of friendships; how vulnerable they are to forces beyond our control, and how the need for them never truly goes away.
