Michael Borremans Fire From The Sun Balenciaga

Balenciaga is under fire yet again for one of its advertisements after a book containing "sinister" paintings by controversial artist Michael Borremans was spotted in the advertisement by eagle-eyed Twitter users. The uproar comes just days after the company pulled another advertisement due to online backlash. Following a barrage of complaints about images of young girls holding teddy bears dressed in bondage gear, Balenciaga issued a statement that "strongly condemned abuse of children in any form."

However, the fashion house is again under fire as internet users criticize another advertisement.

Balenciaga AD Features Michael Borremans Book Fire From The Sun

The advertisement, which debuted on the brand's Instagram this week, appears normal at first glance, but astute internet users noticed it also includes a controversial book. In the photo, a redhead woman wearing smart Balenciaga clothing sits in an office chair with her feet on a cluttered desk. Meanwhile, a copy of Michael Borremans' Fire From The Sun lies on the table among a stack of books.

The David Zwirner gallery described Borremans' art in Fire From The Sun as featuring "toddlers engaged in playful but mysterious acts with sinister overtones and insinuations of violence."

Borremans, 59, is a Ghent-based Belgian painter and filmmaker. His painting technique is influenced by 18th-century art, particularly Edouard Manet's and Edgar Degas's works.

Twitter Users Slam' DISTURBING' AD

The advert has drawn a flood of criticism on Twitter, with one person writing: "So disturbing."

"Balenciaga has been an attention-seeking brand but is this the right attention they want? So weird," someone else tweeted.

A third person wrote: "Those 'paintings' are horrific. I'm a mother and am repulsed at the suggestion of BABIES in such a situation."

"This is seriously sinister," tweeted another.

Balenciaga posted the image with the book in the background shortly after the fashion house pulled an advertisement featuring young girls holding BDSM teddy bears.

"We sincerely apologize for any offense our holiday campaign may have caused," the company wrote on Instagram. "Our plush bear bags should not have been featured with children in this campaign."

In the statement, Balenciaga also threatened legal action against "parties responsible."

"We apologize for displaying unsettling documents in our campaign. We take this matter very seriously and are taking legal action against the parties responsible for creating the set and including unapproved items for our Spring 23 campaign photoshoot."

The statement concluded: "We strongly condemn the abuse of children in any form. We stand for children's safety and well-being."
