Mazi Smith Weapons Charge

Mazi Smith is a well-known Michigan football player and he was arraigned on a felony gun charge on Thursday in Washtenaw County court, but the school has chosen not to suspend Mazi's defensive lineman and the player is scheduled to play in Saturday's Big Ten championship game.

Ann Arbor police arrested Mazi, a senior co-captain for the Wolverines, after finding a gun in his vehicle during an October 7 traffic stop for speeding, says the department in a press release on Thursday. Scroll down to know everything about why was mazi smith arrested.

Mazi Smith Arrested

Eli Savit, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor, said Mazi had a gun when he was pulled over on October 7. But, the player was not arrested, so the charges were not immediate. 

Eli Savit could have had 48 hours to make a charging conclusion had Mazi been arrested. Mazi was charged on November 30.

Mazi Smith Age

Mazi Smith was born on June 16, 2001 and he is 21 years old, as per Wikipedia. During Mazi's arraignment on Thursday, his attorney expressed the player was in the process of getting a concealed pistol license when the player was stopped. Mazi has since received the license, the attorney said. Mazi's bond was set at $5,000 personal recognizance. 

Mazi Smith Gun Charges

On Thursday afternoon, Mazi was arraigned on the charge and then released on a personal recognizance bond. The player is banned from traveling out of state except with the football team. That makes Mazi eligible to play in the College Football Playoff if the Wolverines make it and in the Big Ten championship on Saturday.

According to Wade Manuel, the Michigan Athletic Director, Mazi will continue to play.

Wade released a statement, "We are aware of the charge against Mazi from a traffic stop back in October. Mazi was honest, forthcoming, and cooperative from the very beginning and is a tremendous young man. He is not and never has been considered a threat to the university or community. Based on the information communicated to us, we will continue to allow the judicial process to play out. Mazi will continue to participate as a member of the team."
