The Khatu Shyam Mela commemorates Barbareek, the powerful grandson of Bhima and the son of Ghatotkacha, who had to align with the Kauravas. Krishna promised Barbareek that he would be worshiped in the Kali-yuga just like Sri Krishna. The mela, which draws over a lakh people each year, takes place during Dashami, Ekadashi, and Dwadashi of Shukla Paksha of Falgun month - from the 10th to the 12th day of Shukla Paksha of Moon in Falgun month.

The Khatu Shyam Temple festival and Mela 2022 is from March 3, 2022 to March 8, 2022. Nirjala Ekadasi day is another important festival observed on June 11, 2022. The festival, which draws over 100,000 people each year, is held during the Shukla Paksha Dasami, Ekadasi, and Dwadasi of Phalgun month – from the 10th to the 12th day of the waxing phase of the moon in Phalguna month.

Khatu Shyam Mela Story
The origins of the Khatu Shyamji fair can be traced back to the Mahabharata period in Indian history. Before the Mahabharata battle began, Bhima's grandson, Barbarika, voluntarily urged Lord Krishna and the Pandavas to fight on their side. Barbarik was a brave and skilled warrior. Lord Shiva and the god of fire bestowed upon him three invincible arrows. They also gave him a bow for him to triumph in all three worlds. Lord Krishna thought it would be unjust because the war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas would end in haste. After all, Barbarika was so powerful. Barbarik wanted to be a part of the fight from the beginning, so he armed himself. He took a bow and three arrows and mounted his horse. Swami Krishna then made a move. He disguised himself as a Brahmin to test his strength and mocked him for arriving at the battlefield with only three arrows.Barbarik was laid to rest in Khatu. The site was excavated when the head was discovered in the earth after a long period. After several days of worshiping the head, the king of Khatu built a temple and installed "Sheesh" on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik.

Devotees flock to Khatu Shyamji to worship Krishna in his black form. Many traditional religious rituals of the local people are depicted in the fair. Aside from being a pilgrimage site, many people come to participate in the tradition of cutting their children's hair for the first time in a ceremony known as the 'Jadula Ceremony.'
