Kartik Purnima 2020 Vrat Katha

The story behind the Kartik Purnima Vrat Katha thus goes like this;  the devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, both observe fast on the day of Kartik Purnima, and started their day by taking a holy bath early in the morning and reading the Kartik Purnima Vrat Katha.  The Katha had the story of the demon Tripurasura who defeated the Devas and ruled the entire universe. He became so powerful that he went on to create three worlds in space naming them as Tripura. The Deva was panic stricken and sought the help of Lord Shiva, who in turn killed the Demon Tripursura with his Trident and addressed the devas to celebrate the day as a festival of lights by  illuminating lamps.

Kartik Purnima is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Kartikey, who is the son of Lord Shiva. The last five days of the Kartik month are considered to be the most holy and sacred day and devotees observe fast on this day having food only once during the day. It  is widely believed that in Hindu Scriptures, the  Kartik Purnima Vrat and Puja leads one to the path of  Artha, Dharma, Karma and Salvation.

Kartik Poornima is religiously and spiritually significant as devotees observing the Kartik Purnima vrat will earn the   blessing of Lord Vishnu  with immense fortune. Kartik Purnima is considered as one of the most sacred days for performing religious ceremonies and spiritual austerities.  Observing vrat, performing charity acts and donating  a cow will beget the devotee with immense joy and happiness. It is also believed that following rituals like  Kartik Snan during Kartik month is equivalent to doing 100 Ashvamegha Yagya.

Kartik Purnima is celebrated every year on the 30th of November every year. According to Hindu Calendar, Kartik is the eighth lunar month and the full moon which occurs during the month of Kartika is known as Kartik Purnima. The celebration of Kartik Purnima begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi Day which is also known as Devuthanna Ekadashi. As Ekadashi falls on the  eleventh day and Purnima appears on the fifteenth day of Kartika month, the Kartika Purnima is celebrated for five days. Kartika Purnima is very auspicious  as many rituals and festivals come to an end  on this day. Kartika Purnima also famously known as Tripuri Purnima or Tripurari Purnima.

Kartik Purnima Vrat Pooja Vidhanam

On the day of Kartik Purnima, devotees take a sacred bath or ganga snan at holy places of pilgrimage centers, known as ‘Kartik Snan’ during sunrise and moonrise which is considered to be auspicious and  sacred. After bath, devotees perform pooja observing vrat and worshipping  Lord Vishnu  with flowers, diyas and incense sticks. Devotees recite the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha while performing pooja. Kartik Purnima also commemorates the marriage ceremony of Lord Vishnu and Devi Vrinda.  In Rajasthan, people celebrate this festival as Kartik Purnima and  Melas are  organized in Pushkar, known as Pushkar fair, in the month of Karthik. This fair concludes on the day of Kartik Purnima when devotees take a  sacred dip on the Pushkar Lake  seeking Salvation.
