Police have identified the boy formerly known as "America's Unknown Child," whose body was found in a cardboard box in a wooded area of Philadelphia's Fox Chase neighborhood nearly 66 years ago. The youngster, often known as the "Boy in the Box," was found on February 26, 1957. After decades of inquiry, there had been little progress in the case, but on Thursday, authorities were able to identify him thanks to diligent investigative work and improvements in advanced DNA testing. Police took DNA samples from Joseph's remains after it was excavated from a potter's field in Holmesburg in 1998. It produced nothing. He was reburied at Ivy Hill Cemetery in East Mount Airy that same year, and his body was left undisturbed for two decades.

Capt. Jason Smith, the commanding officer of the homicide unit, said that throughout Joseph's lifetime, his family lived in West Philadelphia, not far from the vicinity of 61st and Market. There are several surviving family members; however, the police did not provide any information about them or their residences. The boy's mother and father, who authorities chose not to name, have passed away.
