History Of Jivitputrika Vrat

As per myths, a very kind wise king named Jimutavahana lived. He was not satisfied with the numerous worldly pleasures, so he handed the Kingdom and its respective obligations to his brothers, after which he made his way to a forest. Sometime later, when the King was walking through the forest, he met an old lady who was weeping. When the king asked her, he learned that the lady was from a snake family, Nagvanshi, who had only one son. But because of the oath, they had taken( a practice to give Pakshiraj Garuda a snake every day as his meal), and that day it was her son's chance. Jimutavahana, seeing the woman's misery, told her that he would defend his son and his life from Garuda. Then, by wrapping himself in a red-colored cloth, he laid down on the rocks and introduced himself as the food for Garuda. Garuda carried Jimutavahana when appeared. He saw that there were no tears or fear of death in his eyes when he was being fed. Garuda thought it was shocking and asked for his true identity. Pakshiraj Garuda left Jimutavahana free while listening to the whole thing, as he was satisfied with his courage and also made a vow not to take any further sacrifices and contributions from snakes. Thus, the existence of the snakes was rescued because of the generosity and courage of the king. The day is also celebrated as Jivitputrika Vrat, where mothers sustain a fast for their children's well-being, great fortune as well as immortality.
