Janmashtami 2022 History

The history of Janmashtami begins with the human incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of Lord Krishna. He was born to kill and destroy Mathura's demon king, Kansa, the brother of Krishna's mother, Devaki. According to Hindu Mythology, Krishna was born on the Ashtami (Eighth Day) of the dark fortnight in the Bhadrapada month between August and September in Mathura. Krishna was born to his biological parents, Vasudeva and Devaki. But Krishna was bought up by his foster parents, Nanda and Yasodha. During his birth, Mathura was ruled by his uncle, King Kansa, who wanted to kill his sister's children as a prophecy said that his death would be on his sister's 8th child, Krishna. When Devaki was carrying her seventh child, Balram was saved by mystical power that transferred Devaki's womb to Princess Rohini's. During the birth of Krishna, the entire palace of King Kansa went into slumber, and hence Vasudeva rescued his son, Krishna and gave him to Nanda and Yasodha in Vrindavan.
