Robbins was born Anthony J. Mahavoric in North Hollywood, California. When Robbins was 17 years old, he started promoting the seminars for the motivational speaker and author Jim Rohn. In the early 1980s, Robbins contracted with NLP co-founder John Grinder. He had learned to firewalk and incorporated it into his seminars.
