Michelle Payne rode Reigning, a horse her father trained, to victory in her first race at Ballarat. Payne suffered a fractured skull and a brain bruise in a severe fall at a race in Melbourne's Sandown Racecourse in March 2004. Payne was given a three-month extension to her apprenticeship because of her protracted healing period, which included another fall in which she fractured her wrist. This gave her enough time to handle her claim.  Payne and Allez Wonder won the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield Racecourse on October 10, 2009, and the following week, trainer Bart Cummings offered Payne a ride in the Caulfield Cup. The third female jockey to compete in the Caulfield Cup was Payne. She swung Cummings' Allez Wonder in the 2009 Melbourne Cup for the only time, with a riding weight of 50.5 kg. The horse completed 16th out of 23 competitors. Yossi was the champion of the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield in 2010, thanks to Payne's riding.
