by Isaimozhi K | Updated May 27, 2022

Who Is Martin Bryant?
Martin Bryant is a pitiful, chubby, dull-witted middle-aged man in prison 25 years after committing Australia's deadliest shooting atrocity. The mass murderer spends his days in the maximum-security section of Risdon Prison outside of Hobart, moving between his cell and the canteen. Professor Paul Mullen, a forensic psychiatrist who assessed the killer after the rampage in which he killed 35 people, including children, told News Corp Australia that Bryant is unhappy in prison. According to The Daily Telegraph, Professor Mullen believes Bryant is "dim, pitiful, and furious," rather than a menacing criminal who masterminded a slaughter. When Bryant plotted and carried out his homicidal rampage, he was a lonely 28-year-old misfit with an intellectual impairment.

In the days before the killing, neighbors who knew Bryant's family told news.com.au that as a child, they had dubbed him "silly Martin, no sense, no feeling." He had shot dead birds and then repeatedly blasted their bodies with rifle slugs while growing up at Carnarvon Bay near Port Arthur in southeastern Tasmania. He was obnoxious, belligerent, and made headlines after setting himself on fire. He eventually befriended Helen Harvey, a 60-year-old lottery heiress whom he may have killed in a vehicle accident, and received her money. He then pretended to be a rural squire, dressing up and wandering around with a rifle.
The Port Arthur Massacre
Bryant murdered 35 people at the Port Arthur site on April 28, 1996. His intention to do so may be his craving for attention, as he told his neighbor that he would do something that would make everyone remember him. His first victims were David and Noelene Martin, whom he thought to be the reason for his depressed father. He entered the Broad Arrow Café with a large blue duffel bag with a rifle. After eating, he moved toward the back of the café and set a video camera on an empty table. He took out a Colt AR-15 SP1 Carbine and began shooting patrons and staff. He had fired seventeen shots, killing twelve people and wounding ten.
He then killed eight people while wounding two at the side of the shop. Then he fled in a stolen car, where he saw a mother walking with two of her kids. He shoots them too, and several other people on his way. This is one of the most disturbing shootings that the world has ever seen.

Martin Bryant Childhood
Bryant's mother said in a 2011 interview that she would often discover his toys shattered when he was a toddler and that he was an "annoying" and "strange" child. According to a psychologist, Bryant would never be able to hold down a job because he would irritate people and would continually be in problems. Locals describe Bryant as acting strangely, such as stealing another boy's snorkel while swimming and cutting down trees on a neighbor's property. Teachers characterized him as detached from reality and emotionless. Bryant was a rowdy and occasionally violent child at school who was bullied severely by his peers. Psychological assessments found that he abused animals after being suspended from New Town Primary School in 1977.
