Kirstie's children, True and Lillie Parker, have announced she has died from cancer. True and Lillie confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that Kirstie died on Monday.

They said, " We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered."

"She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother."

How Did Kirstie Alley Die?

Kirstie Alley died from cancer. Kirstie's first Hollywood role was in 1982, playing Vulcan Starfleet officer Lieutenant Saavik in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

The actress starred alongside Mark Harmon in the comedy Summer School. Kirstie got her big break when she played the role of Rebecca Howe in the sitcom "Cheers." She replaced Shelley Long in the show. For her portrayal of Rebecca, Kirstie won both a Golden Globe and Emmy in 1991.
