Is Epic Games Fortnite Banned by Apple and Google? All you need to know about Why is Fortnite Banned in Apple

Is Fortnite Banned

Fortnite was kicked off both the App Store and the Google Play Store after trying to bypass Apple and Google developers charging the 30 percent fee. That's huge news, as the game has been downloaded on iOS alone over 250 million times. Epic countered by filing legal proceedings against both companies. It's not looking for money from either company, just to repeal what Epic regards as the monopolistic practices of the companies. And it comes at a time when the power of Apple, Google, and other tech giants is being scrutinized by both Europe and the US.

Fortnite is a free-to-play game, which means downloading is free, and Epic makes money from in-game purchases. Players can buy in-game currency V-Bucks, which are used to purchase new outfits, weapons, and skins. It is an enormously profitable business model. In 2018 and 2019, Fortnite generated $4.2 billion.

But Epic has never approved the 30 percent cut taken on their respective app stores by Apple and Google, so it establishes a direct payment system that allows players to buy V-Bucks for cheaper through Epic, bypassing Apple and Google. Players were given a choice when buying 1,000 V-Bucks overpaying $9.99 through the App Store, or $7.99 through Epic.

Epic filed a lawsuit against Apple in the California North District court on Thursday accusing Apple of anti-competitive practices in the distribution of apps and app-related payments. It stresses that Apple is not seeking compensation or special treatment, but that Apple is rolling back its anti-competitive practices and allowing for fair competition. The filing argues that, in charging publishers a 30 percent fee, Apple takes 10 times more than companies such as "PayPal , Stripe, Square or Braintree," which typically charge payment processing rates of around 3 percent.

Epic is also suing Google. Epic followed Apple's lawsuit hours later with a similar one against Google. Its basis is the same as that of Apple: unlawfully anti-competitive practices relating to the distribution of apps, and payments relating to apps. More than a decade ago, Google acquired the Android mobile operating system, promising repeatedly over time that Android would form the basis for an "open" ecosystem in which industry participants could freely innovate and compete without unnecessary restrictions, "reads the filing.

Why is Fortnite Banned?

Fortnite was banned as a result of an update allowing players to purchase in-game currency at a reduced rate if they purchased directly from the website of Epic Games as opposed to the app store. Apple takes from its compulsory payment system a standard 30 percent reduction in sales. Apple said Epic took the "unfortunate step of breaching the App Store guidelines."

Why did Apple ban Fortnite?

After Epic Games introduced direct payments that bypassed Apple's in-app buying system and its 30 percent commission, Apple banned Fortnite. Epic retaliated with a lawsuit claiming Apple is in breach of antitrust law by controlling access to the iOS platform through the App Store and requiring developers to use their payment options.
