Is Fallout 76 Cross Platform Or Crossplay?

Fallout 76 does not support cross-platform play at the time of writing 2022. This means that players on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox can only play with others on the same platforms. It also appears unlikely that the feature will be added to Fallout 76. This is because the possibility was considered in 2018, but it has yet to come, even four years later. The Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda's older and more successful MMO, still needs cross-platform play. This would imply that it is not coming to Fallout 76 or is unlikely ever to arrive. 

Is Fallout 76 A Good Game?

Before we learn to play Fallout 76, let's address the elephant in the room. Fans and detractors of Fallout 76 have been at odds for years, debating whether or not the game is good. However, when the game was released in 2018, it suffered greatly at the hands of the Fallout community. Fallout 76, as a game, featured an empty, lonely world devoid of any meaningful AI presence. It had little of a story, was terribly buggy, and the roadmap was nearly non-existent.

Fast forward to today, and Fallout 76 has been updated and expanded numerous times. Bethesda Game Studios, the game's developer, has fleshed out the MMORPG platform with several storylines, thriving settlements, a season structure, and a slew of fixes that have made the game far more stable. It's a fun game in and of itself, even if the community still doesn't think it's a good Fallout game.

Because Fallout 5 is unlikely to be released for many years, the community's only option is Fallout 76. Bethesda Game Studios revealed in mid-2022 that Fallout 76 was on a multi-year roadmap and that there would be enough content to keep the fire stoked for at least five years.

What Are The Alternatives?

There is a long list out there, and some of the best crossplay games are comparable to Fallout 76. Crossplay is available, but somewhat limited, in the multiplayer-only survival game Rust. Ark is crossplay to some extent if you want to run around an open world with your friends and fight dinosaurs. There are alternatives, but Fallout 76 is almost in a league of its own for a multiplayer, post-apocalyptic adventure.

Will Fallout 76 Eventually Get Cross-Play?

Do not hold out hope for any kind of cross-platform play in the future. Microsoft owns Bethesda, so there's no reason for PlayStation players to be able to play with Xbox players. Fallout 76 appears to be benefiting players, and Microsoft would be foolish to allow it unless it was a financially sound move.

Although fans may find it strange that cross-play is not allowed on the service, not allowing cross-play benefits individual consoles rather than the game itself. This will encourage players to not only buy the version their friend is playing to play with them, but also to purchase the online services. If you have a friend who has the same game on a different platform but has cross-play, there is no reason for you to buy the game on that platform.

Furthermore, adding a feature like that to the game is costly, time-consuming, and does not have a high demand in the Fallout 76 community.
