Is Cris Collinsworth Sick?

During the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday night, Cris Collinsworth was clearly not feeling like his usual.

Together with his new colleague Mike Tirico, Collinsworth served as the color analyst for "Sunday Night Football" as usual. His voice was rough, and he didn't seem as excited as normal, which made viewers realize right away that he was ill. Tirico addressed Collinsworth's issue early in the first quarter since whatever it was that was troubling him was so clear.

Cris Collinsworth Health Update

During the Cowboys-Bucs game's broadcast on Sunday Night on NBC, the announcer Cris Collinsworth didn't sound all that great. Collinsworth's voice was distinctly incredibly hoarse early in the game. Collinsworth's broadcast partner Mike Tirico stated that despite feeling great, Collinsworth "is playing hurt" as a result of a busy broadcast schedule.

What Happened To Cris Collinsworth And Al Michaels?

Less about what's happening on the field and more about what's occurring in the broadcast booth has been one of the most captivating topics of the 2022 NFL season.

After a few weeks of games, viewers observed that NBC color analyst Cris Collinsworth had stopped using his trademark "Collinsworth Slide," which involved gliding across the broadcast booth desk to reach the camera frame.

Collinsworth provided the following explanation on September 20 regarding the origin of the slide and its removal from "Sunday Night Football" broadcasts, much to the disappointment of viewers and fans of such trivial matters. Collinsworth's full explanation of the cause and effect is as follows:

So, here's the basics of what happened. When Al Michaels was my partner, Al Michaels did an opening monologue. He came on by himself and that's what Al has done for the last 20 years. So, I'm not changing that, you just do that. You just do your opening monologue. So they tell me to sit on the desk, and they put a piece of tape, believe it or not, Kay, between my legs. And they put it on the desk, and they say, straddle that piece of tape right there.

So I straddle that piece of tape and I sit in there, just like I'm gonna be talking to Al. So then the cameraman comes over there and he looks at me, and Al's gonna do his opening monologue, so they shoot this solo shot of him, and he goes, 'Cris, get your ass out of the frame. What are you doing? Get out of the way.' So I go, 'You told me to sit on the piece of tape, what do you mean 'get out of the way?''

So he goes, 'Just lean out of the picture, your shoulder's in the picture.' So I just lean, like that and get out of the picture. So then Al comes on and does his, 'Welcome to Lambeau Field today, let's welcome in my partner Cris Collinsworth,' so then I just slide in, so that I still have my legs between the piece of tape. So that's how the whole thing got started. …

But, Mike Tirico doesn't do the opening monologue, so what am I gonna do? It's like, I'm sittin' there. I could lean out — but then it'd be like, stupid. So what do you do? Do you do it just for effect? Do you do it for — I don't know, I don't know what I'm gonna do. Maybe I'll leave that way.

Where Is Cris Collinsworth Tonight?

In Week 1, the NBC broadcast team performed double duty, with the duo of Collinsworth and Mike Tirico calling both the "Sunday Night Football" slot and the Rams-Bills game on Thursday night.

Collinsworth typically has a velvety, gravelly voice coming through the television, but on Sunday night, some viewers remarked that the veteran analyst seemed especially rough.

While some were worried about his health, Collinsworth's play-by-play man Tirico clarified that he was in excellent health but that playing an extra game this week may have somewhat impaired his voice.

On Tuesday, NBC made official announcements about its Sunday Night Football broadcast team for the 2022 campaign, including a new play-by-play announcer and sideline reporter. In the network's booth, play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico will be joined by color analyst Cris Collinsworth. Cris Collinsworth will be on the panel on 25th September 2022 in Sunday Night Football of 49ers at Broncos.
