His father was an Engineer in the Royal Air Force in Burma. His bedroom had two windows opposite the St Peter's Primary School across the street. At the age of 12, he wished to become a comedian but thought that he may not suit for that role. He joined the organization called The Children of Mary. At the age of 14, Connolly started to become interested in music, mainly Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry. When he was 15 years old, he left the school with two Engineering qualifications. He joined the Territorial Army Reserve unit 15th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment. He remembered his experiences in the song “Weekend Soldier”.

Connolly was earlier the vocal opponent for the Scottish Independence. In 1974, he took part in the political party TV broadcast supporting the Labour Party, which intensionally criticized the Scottish National Party. He criticized the SNP for the increase in Anglophoboa in Scotland. He was the one to raise his voice about the expense of Independence. In April 2014, he gave an interview with the Radio Times pointing to the independence referendum. He raised his voice and said that "I think it's time for people to get together, not split apart. The more people stay together, the happier they'll be." In an interview with the BBC, he openly told that he will not be voting as he was to fly to New Zealand that day. He told his belief that the people of Scotland do not require his opinion to make up their minds on the subjects.
