Lansbury is the daughter of Moyna Macgill, an Irish actress and English politician Edgar Lansbury and was born into an upper-middle-class household in central London. In 1940, she came to the United States and and studied acting in New York City. In 1942, she moved to Hollywood and signed with MGM, where she landed her first film roles in Gaslight (1944) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), for which she got 2 Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe Award. She appeared in 11 more MGM pictures, mainly in minor roles, after her contract with the studio expired in 1952, and she began supplementing her film career with stage appearances. Despite being mainly regarded as a B-list celebrity during this time, her performance in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) gained widespread acclaim and is regarded as one of her best.
