All matches are played behind closed doors amid the coronavirus pandemic across three venues- national capital, Dubai and Sharjah. The tournament, which was scheduled to be held from 29 March, was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic and moved to UAE amid a rising number of COVID-19 cases in India. On reaching UAE in August 2020, all team members observed a mandatory six-day quarantine, after which the players commenced training for the big event.

It is a gift given to the bowler with the foremost wickets to his name in an IPL season. The bowler with the foremost wickets within the tournament during the season would wear the Purple Cap when playing, or while in the field. In case of a tie, the Purple Cap is given to the bowler with a superior economy rate. The award has been a component of the tournament since its inception. Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir was the primary bowler to carry the Purple Cap. He took 22 wickets in 11 matches.
