Is House Of The Dragon Based On A Book?
The stories were Established in George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon. The novel is not included in the main series, A Song of Ice and Fire, on which Game of Thrones is based. Instead, Fire & Blood is a novel that describes significant occasions that happened hundreds of years earlier than those in Game of Thrones. Similar to Tolkien's The Silmarillion, which gives context for the enormous Lord of the Rings world but isn't exactly light reading, it reads more like a history textbook than a novel. Since the events in Fire & Blood won't directly impact those in Game of Thrones, the distant timeline is helpful.
