Houghton Feast is an ancient festival that will commence every October in the town. It has its origins in the 12th century, this festival is considered as a dedication festival to the parish church of St Michael & All Angels. The Houghton festival lasts for ten days and it features a fairground, carnival, fireworks and an ox-roasting event in commemoration of Rector Bernard Gilpin's feeding of the poor. When Will Houghton Feast 2021 Starts?
The Houghton Feast is scheduled to happen between Friday, 8th October and Sunday, 17th October, and organisers are saying that it will be much better than ever. The full programme schedule is yet to be finalised. Although, the carnival parade through the centre of Houghton is planned to take place on Saturday, 9th October. This festival is popular among children and it involves musicians, dancers, a clown, vintage cars, and etc. Those who wish to take part in the parade, must register beforehand. The parade finishes at Rectory Park.
The historic church of St Michael and All Angels on Church Street will open its doors for those who wish to enjoy coffee, cake, soup and sandwiches. Visitors can also visit the tomb of Bernard Gilpin and explore this beautiful church. In addition to this, there will also be concerts, a fairground, fireworks, illuminations, exhibitions, and etc. The essential part of the feast is the ox roast which will commence on Saturday, 9th October 2021. The ox will be prepared by the Houghton Feast Trust, and will be carved by the Mayor of Sunderland

Mayor of Sunderland, Henry Trueman, said: “The Houghton Feast is truly an event we in the City of Sunderland can all be very proud of and I do hope you are able to come along and join in all the wonderful festivities and commemorations.” Cllr Kevin Johnston, chair of the Houghton Feast steering committee, said: “It’s fantastic the festival of Houghton Feast can go ahead in full this year and, utilising technology including live streaming, there will continue to be an exciting digital programme of events to engage with.”
