Guru Purnima 2020 (Poornima) is a traditional festival celebrated in dedication to all the academic and spiritual Masters, who are revered by all as the enlightened ones ready to share their philosophy, wisdom to all those who approach them with sincerity expecting no monetary returns and is in constant pursuit of selfless service to mankind called karma yoga.  The Guru Purnima 2020 is observed in India, Nepal, and Bhutan by the Hindus, Buddhists and Jains to commemorate and revere their spiritual teachers / leaders with utmost devotionand  sincerity. The Guru Purnima 2020  was celebrated on the full moon (purnima)  day in the hindu month of Ashada which falls mid June-July in English calendar. The Guru Purnima 2020 was observed on the 5th of July this year. Due to the covid 19 pandemic, it was advised and recommended to observe and celebrate the festival indoors and to avoid visiting religious places and Guru Memorials.

Guru Purnima 2020 is usually celebrated as a 5-day event with melas being organised and Krishna devotees from all over the world coming to Bihar to visit and walk  the 21km Girraj Parikrama. This year due to Covid 19 pandemic, the Guru Purnima festival could not be celebrated in its usual grandeur. The Guru purnima date and timings are as under:

Gurupurnima 2020 Significance

The significance of Gurupurnima 2020 is Guru purnima 2020 was revived by Mahatma Gandhi as a tribute to his Spiritual Guru Shrimad Rajchandra when the day itself had lost its importance, due to external foreign influence. India a spiritual land where the Guru is considered equal to one’s parents followed by the supreme, the day is also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima the birthday of the Great Spiritual Sage Veda Vyasa, who wrote the great epic Mahabharata The day also commemorated the contributions of spiritual masters, Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya, Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Shri Ramanuja Acharya. The disciples visit memorials,  observe and pay respects and tributes to the great gurus and take oath to follow the principles propagated by the Gurus. It is widely believed that Gautam Buddha gave his first sermons in Sarnath, Uttarpradesh.

How Guru Purnima is celebrated?

The celebration of Guru Poornima 2020  is marked by spiritual activities and may include following certain rituals and pooja celebrations in honor of the Guru; which is called Guru Pooja. The word Guru is derived from two words, gu and ru. The Sanskrit root gu means darkness or ignorance, and ru denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore, a Guru is the teacher  who removes the darkness of our ignorance. Gurus are believed by many to be the integral  part of life. Indian academicians celebrate this day by thanking their gurus as well as remembering scholars and divine sages. The Guru purnima 2020  is observed and celebrated as an expression of gratitude toward the teacher by  the  disciple. In the world of  Indian classical dance and music which follows the Guru-shishya parampara, consider Lord Shiva as the first guru of the divine dance form Bharatnatyam.


Buddhists believe that Gautama Buddha after enlightenment went from Bodhgaya to Sarnath and gave his first sermon in Sarnath, Uttarpradesh on the Guru purnima day. Buddhists observe on this day the  eight precepts. Vipassana meditators  on this day meditate under the guidance of their teachers. Buddhist monks remain in a single place, their temples and dedicate themselves to the services of the temple. In some monasteries, monks dedicate themselves to intensive meditation. Many Buddhists intensify  their spiritual training and adopt more ascetic practices, such as abstaining from meat, alcohol, or smoking.
