Gauri Tritiya, popularly called Gangaur, is well known extensively in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Gangaur pageant is an eighteen day long pageant that begins on the primary day of Chaitra month. Gangaur Puja is devoted to Lord Shiva and god Annapurna and is a Hindu pageant that celebrates matrimonial happiness. ‘Gana’ suggests that Shiva and ‘Gaur’ means that Annapurna and this divine couple is idolised by all the womenfolk on these days for the long lifetime of their husbands. Gangaur Puja is additionally called Saubhagya Teej. The rituals related to Gauri Puja and Gangaur pageant are filled with colours, vibrance and reverence. The celebrations for Gauri Teej begin from early morning hours once girls take shower and obtain wearing traditional attires to perform Gangaur Puja. The ash of Holika Dahan and dirt are mixed so grains of wheat and barley are sowed and patterned for eighteen days until the fruits of Gangaur pageant. Girls observe fasts on these days and pray for their husband’s long life. On the last 3 days of Hindu deity Tritiya or Gangaur, preparation of their departure starts. Gauri and Isar are created to wear bright traditional attires so throughout an auspicious hour, married also as single girls place the idols of each the deities and confiscate a colourful and delightful procession in a garden or a step well. Girls sing Gangaur Geet associated with the departure of Gauri to her husband’s house. On the ultimate day, pictures of Gauri and Isar are placed in a tank or well. This marks the conclusion of Gangaur pageant.
