Will Netflix Text Me About Payment?
Did you receive an email or text message (SMS) asking for your Netflix account email, phone number, password, or payment method? If so, it was most likely not from us. Here are some pointers to help you identify and handle a suspicious email or text message while keeping your account safe:
We will never request your personal information via text or email. This includes the following:
Credit or debit card information
Account information
Passwords for Netflix
We will never accept payment from a third-party vendor or website.
If the text or email contains a link to a URL you are unfamiliar with, do not tap or click on it. Keep all information off the newly opened website if you have already done so.
What Happens When You Enter Your Details?
Suppose you are duped into believing the text message is legitimate and enter your information on the bogus Netflix website. In that case, the scammer now has your information and can use it to commit additional fraud. The extent of the damage will be determined by the information stolen from you:
Your Netflix login credentials are:
Scammers can disable your Netflix account and possibly gain access to your other online accounts (if you use the same username and password for other accounts).
Name and location:
Scammers can use this information to commit identity fraud or to further deceive you by impersonating your bank or other businesses with which you do business.
Credit card details:
Scammers will go shopping with your credit card information, buying whatever they can before you realize you've been duped.
Several Social Security:
Your SSN is potentially the most damaging piece of information that scammers can obtain. They will use it to steal your identity (which can take years to recover), open credit lines in your name (e.g., credit cards and loans), and commit additional fraud in your name.
What To Do When The Damage Occurs?
The key to minimizing the damage is to protect your accounts as soon as possible. When you realize you've entered your information on a scam website, you should do the following:
Alter your Netflix password (and the password for any other online accounts that share the same login info).
If you entered your credit card information, notify your bank. They will most likely cancel your card and replace it with a new number and expiration date.
Scanning your device for viruses and malware is recommended. By clicking the link, you may have installed malicious software on your device that could have stolen all your login information for all accounts.
Send an email to Netflix at [email protected]
Block the text message and report it as spam (if your phone has this function).
To avoid receiving spam texts in the first place, block them within your messaging app or with a third-party app.
If you gave the scammer your SSN, you should freeze your credit or place a fraud alert on your credit report.
Inform the authorities about the scam.
