Do Koreans Celebrate Christmas?
Christmas in South Korea is not like Christmas in the United States or Europe. There are some striking similarities, such as Christmas decorations in store windows and beautiful Korean Christmas ornaments adorning store walls, but when you look deeper, the differences become clear. The most striking similarity is that Christmas is a national holiday in Korea, which means that most staff members have the day off to invest with family members and friends. What's not to appreciate about that? With the exception of in many Asian countries, South Korea has a sizable Christian population, which explains why the day is a national holiday. It also implies that different Christmas services are held in churches across the country for those who want to celebrate the religious component of the holiday. Nevertheless, because Christmas isn't one of Korea's major traditional holidays like Seollal or Chuseok, there isn't an angry rush of people trying to get back to their homeland for the holiday. Whereas most Koreans have the day off, it is not as big a deal as it is in many Western countries. It isn't the most important holiday of the year, but that doesn't necessarily imply it isn't a good enough excuse to start taking a day off to relax!

Christmas Day
The rich mosaic of Christmas customs that exists today dates back through the ages from all over the world. For example, the Christmas candles and lights, which are meant to represent guiding beacons for the Christ child, may have emerged from the Yule log, which was lit to incentivise the Sun to return as part of the jol (Yule) celebration in pagan Scandinavia. Its origins are most likely in winter celebrations long before the advent of Christianity. People in colder climates valued the practice of decorating a tree or using plants and trees that remained green all year. Evergreens were thought to ward off sorcerers, supernatural beings, evil spirits, and even illness in some cultures. Even during Middle Ages, December 24 was observed as the Feast of Adam and Eve, finishing with a Paradise Tree, a fir tree hung with red apples.
Christmas Celebrations
Just before Christmas, known as Christmas Eve, is the first day of celebration. Every year, on December 24, as per the Gregorian calendar, it is observed. The second day is Christmas Day, which is observed every year on December 25. The third day is Boxing Day, which is observed on December 26th, the day after Christmas. Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, also recognised as 'The Son Of God' in the Christian religion. With their three gifts for the Christ child, the three wise men marked the beginning of Christmas gift-giving. Since then, people have made up various stories to tell their children about where their Christmas presents came from. In early Christian legends, the historical Saint Nicholas was known for saving storm-tossed mariners, persisting up for children, and providing gifts to the poor.
