On this day in 1961, India took Goa from Portugal, effectively ending the era of European colonies on the subcontinent after a military invasion. The 4,000 men and four boats defending an area the size of Kent were rapidly defeated by 45,000 soldiers, 42 planes, an aircraft carrier, and 15 other ships.
