On the morning of the 9/11 attacks, Michael Jackson narrowly missed a meeting on top of the World Trade Center. On September 11, the music legend was supposed to be at the Twin Towers, but he overslept after staying up late the night before with his mother, Katherine, and sister, Rebbie. "Thankfully none of us had any idea that Michael was expected for a meeting that morning at the top of one of the Twin Towers," Jackson's brother Jermaine Jackson said in his memoirs Through a Brother's Eyes, looking back on the near miss.

#2 Ian Thorpe

The Olympic swimming champion was out jogging when he decided to visit the Twin Towers' observation floor. He then realised he had forgotten his camera and took a taxi back to his hotel to get it. He realised he would have been in the building once he was in his hotel room and witnessed the atrocities on the television. Frank Turner, one of Thorpe's managers, told Australian radio that he was "about 20 minutes away from being there." "He was taken aback... Who knows what might have happened a few minutes later?"

#3 Sarah Ferguson

Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, was 20 minutes late on the morning of September 11th. That morning, the princess was scheduled to visit her charity office, Chances for Children, on the 101st floor of the north tower. After an interview with Matt Lauer at NBC's adjacent studios, Fergie, now 61, found herself stuck in heavy traffic on New York's streets. "I see every minute as a blessing," the Duchess told Hello! Magazine, reflecting on her "near death experience."

#4 Mark Wahlberg

On September 11, Mark Wahlberg was scheduled to board American Airlines Flight 11, which was hijacked by terrorists and slammed into the North Tower. However, the actor and his buddies decided to modify their plans at the last minute and chartered a jet to Toronto, Canada, to attend a film festival. The actor was afterwards chastised for stating that if he had been on board, he could have stopped the attackers. "If I had been on that plane with my kids, it would not have gone down like it did," he told Men's Journal.

#5 Seth MacFarlane

The creator of the animated sitcom Family Guy was scheduled to board the same American Airlines flight as Mark Wahlberg, which was eventually hijacked by terrorists. However, owing to a booking mix-up and a hangover, Seth MacFarlane just missed boarding the flight. The 7.45 a.m. flight was supposed to leave at 8.15 a.m., according to MacFarlane's travel agent, so when he arrived at the airport late, boarding had already closed. He was ten minutes late for his flight. "I was booked on that flight, and I was drinking the night before, and I was hungover, and I missed the plane by about 10 minutes," he later explained. For me, it was a razor-thin margin."

#6 Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe had no idea he was on board the terrorists' practise aircraft for 9/11 as he sat on a trip 11 days before the attacks. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary as the Code Black star boarded his regular trip from Washington, DC to Los Angeles following the completion of production for The West Wing. However, it was later discovered that the 9/11 attackers were actually on board and had used the aeroplane as a mock run. The terrorists later used the same jet to attack the Pentagon. "I flew with the 9/11 hijackers on the dry run without recognising it," Lowe subsequently recalled. "At the time, I was shooting The West Wing in DC, and I always took the aircraft from [Washington] Dulles to Los Angeles, which they subsequently turned into the Pentagon."
