Hi-de-Hi! is a BBC television sitcom that aired on BBC1 from January 1, 1980, until January 30, 1988. Hi-de-Hi! was a cult favorite of 1980s UK television, set in a vacation camp in the fictional coastal town of Crimpton-on-Sea in Essex. Maplins is a vacation camp group owned by Joe Maplin, loosely modeled on Butlins or Pontins, with "yellow coats" substituting redcoats or bluecoats. Nine seasons were shown, immersing fans in the life of camp artists attempting to make it' in the entertainment world.
The BAFTA-winning screenplay was inspired by writer Jimmy Perry's experiences working at Butlins after leaving the army over the holiday season. The cast was not very well-known before their appearances on the program, but they have now become household names, owing primarily to the show's success.

Simon Cadell as Prof. Jeffrey Fairbrother (Entertainment Manager s.1-5)
Simon portrayed Jeffrey Fairbrother, an uptight Cambridge-educated academic turned entertainment manager who joined Maplins intending to gain insight into everyday people's lives.
However, once the series ended, father-of-two Simon went on to have a successful career as a stage actor. He won an Olivier Award in 1993 for his performance in Giles Havergal's adaption of Graham Greene's novel Travels with My Aunt. Cadell married Hi-de-Hi! Co-creator David Croft's daughter, actress Rebecca Croft. He was a heavy smoker who was claimed to use 80 cigarettes per day at one time; he died of lung cancer at the age of 45 in 1996. Simon revealed in one of his final interviews: "I don't want to build myself up as anything special.
Paul Shane as Ted Bovis (Camp Host)
Ted Bovis, played by Paul Shane, was one of the series' most notable characters as the camp host. Ted was beloved with the campers, but he continuously concocted schemes to defraud them of money, such as phony birthdays, raffles, fund-raisers, and rigged bingo. When he was ready to depart Maplins, he stated that he had earned a pantomime role and a job demonstrating a potato peeler in supermarkets.
Ted's Teddy Boy quiff, sideburns, and flashy checkered coats made it evident that the sitcom was set in the 1950s. After damaging his back, the Yorkshire-born actor, who was pushed out of mine at the age of 27, first became a singer, then a comic. Before he became a Hi-De-Hi! Star, the father-of-three featured in Coronation Street, where he was eventually noticed for this part. Paul then appeared in You Rang, M'Lord? and afterward in Holby City, Emmerdale, and a Touch Of Frost. Su Pollard as Peggy Ollerenshaw (Chalet Maid/Yellowcoat)
Su was also born in Nottingham and portrayed Peggy Ollerenshaw, the eccentric maid who desired to be a Yellowcoat, and she has remained a familiar face on television. While her character was renowned for her frizzy Eighties perm and huge eyeglasses, the actress had a very colorful sense of fashion, well known for constantly wearing bright colored glasses. Su rose to prominence in the sitcom Hi-de-Hi! after appearing in Two Up, Two Down in the one-off series. The 71-year-old has performed more than 35 theatrical plays and 40 pantomimes.
Despite a brief pop career (she reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart with the song "Starting Together") during her time on Hi-de-Hi!, Su stuck with acting, and shortly after the series ended, she starred in the Upstairs Downstairs-inspired sitcom You Rang, M'Lord? with fellow Hi-de-Hi! Stars Paul Shane and Jeffrey Holland. The actress has dabbled with presenting over the years, including a role in the Radio 2 drama For Better or For Worse. In fact, she was named "Rear of the Year" in 1988. Her recent appearances on prominent TV series such as Celebrity MasterChef earlier this year have also helped propel her career.
Barry Howard as Barry Stuart (Dancing Instructor)
Barry Howard, born in Nottingham, rose to prominence as one half of the ballroom dance duet Barry and Yvonne Stuart-Hargreaves. Before joining the long-running series, Barry had a few minor roles, including Terry And June. Barry, who co-starred with Diane Holland as his on-screen wife, was frequently the brunt of the jokes at the holiday camp, while his snobbish wife sought to retain her dignity and rise above it all. He also starred in The House Of Windsor in 1994 and his own This Is Your Life in 1989.
The actor was also featured on stage in pantomimes, most notably as the nasty step-sisters in Cinderella starring John Inman. David Griffin as Clive Dempster (Entertainment Manager s. 6-9)
David appears later in the series as an aristocratic war hero and heartthrob Clive Dempster DFC, taking over for Jeffrey Fairbrother as Entertainment Manager. He was especially popular with Welsh femme fatale Gladys Pugh, and after an on-again, off-again love, the characters married and went off to Australia when Hi-de-Hi! Ended.
After the event, the 77-year-old continued to collaborate with his Hi-De-Hi! Co-stars, touring the stage production The Good Sex Guide with Su Pollard. The actor portrayed Emmet Hawksworth in Keeping Up Appearances for four years, and he has also starred in Doctor Who, 'Allo!
