Romantic Comedies

Romantic comedy (rom-com or rom-com) is a type of comedy and slice-of-life fiction that focuses on lighter, amusing plotlines centered on romantic concepts, such as how real love can overcome most hardships. According to the dictionary, a comedy is "a hilarious movie, play, or television programme about a love storey that ends happily." According to another definition, its "main distinguishing element is a love plot in which two sympathetic and well-matched lovers are united or reconciled."

10 Best Romantic Comedies Amazon Prime

1. Clueless (1995)

Clueless is, first and foremost, iconic. Despite the fact that it has been nearly thirty years, it remains a cultural touchstone for today's teenagers. Perhaps its enduring appeal stems from its premise, which was inspired by the literal inventor of the romantic comedy, Jane Austen. Clueless' Cher (Alicia Silverstone), like Austen's Emma Woodhouse, operates as a matchmaker for everyone around her but can't seem to get her own love life in order. The story does not properly capture the film's allure. Clueless is both funny and sweet, has iconic outfits, and, most importantly, is jam-packed with memorable, quotable lines. "You're a virgin who can't drive," was never a more scathing remark in cinema.

2. The Big Sick (2017)

Soon-to-be Kumail Nanjiani plays himself in filmmaker Michael Showalter's tragic retelling of Nanjiani and wife Emily V. Gordon's love affair. The Big Sick, written by Nanjiani and Gordon, follows a couple on the verge of a breakup who are unexpectedly faced with the prospect of losing each other forever. This substantial rom-com is ideal for times you want a meaningful viewing with a high entertainment value. It's genuinely humorous and wonderfully sweet. - Alison Foreman, Entertainment Reporter.

3. Priceless (2006)

Anti-capitalists, take note: this film is not for you! Priceless is a French rom-com-slash-sex-farce about an honest, hardworking gold-digger who is merely trying to scrape together a luxurious existence in exchange for her company. Audrey Tatou (in an unbelievably gorgeous outfit) appears to have it all figured out as she jets across Europe with her wealthy boyfriends — until she spends the night with a luxury hotel waiter (Gad Elmaleh) whom she mistakes for another rich mark. In a different film, this story may be harsh or its characters inexcusable, but Priceless keeps us laughing at the unbridled vanity and excess in front of us. So, perhaps this is a film for anti-capitalists.

4. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Four Weddings and a Funeral, directed by Mike Newell, is about as big as a romantic comedy can go, with many Academy Award nominations and Golden Globe victories. Though Hugh Grant's original fumbling romantic role propelled him to celebrity, the film's strength lies in the chemistry of the entire friend group who laugh and affectionately tease their way through the year's social activities. Four Weddings and a Funeral was written by Richard Curtis, an incredible rom-com great who also penned Notting Hill, Bridget Jones' Diary, and Love, Actually, as if you needed another incentive to watch after learning Hugh Grant was in it.

5. The Prince & Me (2004)

We present The Prince & Me, a ludicrous and perfect film, for something a little fluffier. Julia Stiles is an ordinary University of Wisconsin undergrad who initially despises the guy, dates him, and discovers he is the Crown Prince of Denmark! In other words, it's a standard college narrative! You know everything about this film before you watch it, yet because to the magnetism of Luke Mably's prince and Stiles' genuineness and acting chops, The Prince & Me never disappoints. It's a beach read for your television!

6. Fever Pitch (1997)

This British rom-com has a shamefully low American profile, owing to our remaking it with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore as Red Sox fans. The original Fever Pitch, based on a Nick Hornby novel, stars Colin Firth (!!!) as a schoolteacher whose devotion for Arsenal interferes with his growing romance with Ruth Gemmell. What is it with guys and their sports? If the ad ("Life becomes complex when you love one woman and eleven guys") doesn't excite you, witnessing Mr. Darcy transform into a charming slob will!

7. What If (2013)

Daniel Radcliffe strikes up an instant connection with a woman at a party, only to discover she's happily married. Despite the scoffing of everyone around them, the pair decides to just be friends. Though the premise may sound PTSD-inducing to those of us who have wasted years pining over unattainable crushes, What If (or The F Word if you reside outside the United States) is a genuinely reassuring film. The film flies because to its cast, which includes a captivating Zoe Kazan, a relatable Radcliffe, and an unexpected (and crazy) Adam Driver who unsurprisingly steals his parts.

8. Tortilla Soup (2001)

Tortilla Soup is a nice and heartwarming film that is enjoyable from beginning to end. This romantic-comedy-drama, based on Ang Lee's Taiwanese classic Eat Drink Man Woman, stars Héctor Elizondo as a retired chef who is concerned about his three adult children who still live in his suburban Los Angeles house. While the plot concentrates on the four main characters' romantic hardships and tribulations, it also allows for time and space to explore their changing familial connections. Tortilla Soup is a broader entry than many others on this list, and it's a great choice for when you're in the need for something cosy — much like the numerous mouthwatering Mexican foods served up in this film.

9. Barefoot in the Park (1967)

Barefoot in the Park is the place to go for a vintage vibe. This '60s farce, based on Neil Simon's phenomenally famous Broadway original, stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda in their prime as a newlywed couple still working out the kinks in their marriage. While you should mentally prepare for the picture to feel obsolete, the glitter of bygone New York, the running comedy of hiking up and down a fifth-floor walk up, and the chemistry of Redford and Fonda will keep you captivated. Barefoot in the Park was described at the time as an amusing, light-as-air romp lacking substance and logic – exactly what we're searching for in a rom-com!

10. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

Sometime in the 2000s, romantic comedies stopped trying to be humorous and began attempting to say something significant, none more so than 500 Days of Summer. This indie favorite deviates from the rom-com template by telling a non-linear story about a couple that comes together and falls apart. Joseph Gordon-sincerity Levitt's is evident, and the object of his adoration, Zooey Deschanel, is a quirky girl so unusual that she single-handedly ushered in a new era of messy bangs for millions of women around. 500 Days of Summer is a pleasant movie for a love story that gets you right in the stomach, with surprising elements of surrealism and a terrific supporting cast.
