In Detroit, Michigan, The Temptations were created by former members of two competing bands. Otis Williams & the Distants consisted of him, Elbridge "Al '' Bryant, and Melvin Franklin, while The Primes included Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. David Ruffin, who sang lead vocals on several of the band's biggest successes, including "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," took Eldridge's position in 1964. After Eddie and Paul left in 1971, the group's lineup underwent numerous changes, yet they still managed to tour and perform.
