Freshwater ecosystems include rivers, creeks, lakes, ponds, and streams. Lakes are generated by a variety of natural processes. Many arose after glaciers moved across the Earth between 12,000 and 1.8 million years ago, leaving giant bowl-shaped hollows in the soil that filled with precipitation and runoff during the latest ice age. Others were formed when the Earth's crust changed, leaving grooves and ridges in which water could collect. When a volcano erupts, all of the magma may pour out. If the land collapses into the empty crater, it leaves large holes that can become lakes. This is how Crater Lake in Oregon evolved to be.
Rivers form when melting snow or ice cascades down mountains, following the land's grooves and channels to the sea—rivers always flow to the sea. Wetlands, which are areas where the land is submerged in water for the majority of the time, commonly grow around flooded rivers or in areas where groundwater seeps up through the bedrock beneath the soil. Different types of rocks, such as granite, sandstone, and limestone, make up bedrock. Water can dissolve limestone if it seeps through the gaps between these rocks. Beavers may even produce wetlands by damming rivers and streams to create wetlands.
