One stated that Coy passed away from a drug overdose immediately after returning to his Cornelius, North Carolina home, while another outrageously claimed that Gibbs died in a car accident. But, it was totally a rumor and Coy Gibbs did not die in a car accident.

In a statement released publicly just before the start of the NASCAR season finale, the team stated, “It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night. The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time."
