United Nations Public Service Day 2020 

The United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated on June 23 to value and virtue of public service to the community. The UN holds annual Public Service Awards ceremony to recognize groundbreaking achievements and public sector efforts around the world. This event embraces public service functions, excellence, and visibility.

What is Union Public Service Award?

The Union Public Service Award (UNPSA) is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service and it was started in 2003. 

Since 2003 around 82 countries have participated in the UNPSA and reached over 4000 initiatives. From this, 250 initiatives have received awards from projects like improving pharmaceutical and health services monitoring and governing temporary settlements for displaced people, early assessment of children with special needs and investing in their skills development, promoting gender equality, and educating young girls about adolescent reproductive health and puberty.

UNPSA winners are chosen according to the five UN regional groups: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Asia to maintain a level playing field for nominations from different countries.

UNPSA recognizes public service institutions' accomplishments and efforts in three categories: capacity to serve the poorest and most needy through inclusive programs and partnerships; initiatives to make organizations inclusive and ensure participation in decision-making, and enhancing gender equality public service in order to achieve the SDGs.

What is the history of the UN Public Service Day?

On 20 December 2002, bypassing resolution 57/277, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 23 June to observe as the United Nations Public Service Day. On this day, various events are organized to highlight the important contributions done by public servants to the countries.

At the same time, to coincide with the United Nations Public Service Day, Africa Public Service Day is being celebrated in Africa.

What is the theme of UN Public Service Day 2020?

The United Nations Public Service Day 2020 will take place under the theme: “Action Today, Impact Tomorrow: Innovating and Transforming Public Services and Institutions to Realize the Sustainable Development Goals”. 

How is the United Nations Public Service Day celebrated?

Many public service organizations and departments around the world are celebrating this day by organizing various activities to highlight the important role that public servants play in social development. Such events include stalls and booths about the public service, organized lunches with guest speakers,  internal awards ceremonies within the public service department, and special announcements to honor public servants. 

2020 UN Public Service Day - Events

To observe the United Nations Public Service Day, the United Nations Public Service Forum (UNPSF) 2020 was scheduled to be held in Busan, the Republic of Korea, from 23 to 26 June 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the forum & related events will be held virtually.  UN DESA and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of Korea is organizing a virtual event to pay homage to public servants who have worked on the frontlines. The event also aims to recognize the lifesaving work they have undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event will bring together public servants and leaders with an aim to discuss the importance of the continuation of public service provision amid the COVID-19 crisis. It aims to examine the various approaches and measures countries have taken during the crisis to better mitigate such challenges in the future.

What was the theme for United Nations Public Service Day 2019?

UNPSF 2019 was held in the Republic of Azerbaijan from 24 to 26 June 2019. The theme for UNPSF 2019: ‘Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through effective Delivery of Services, Innovative Transformation, and Accountable Institutions’.

UNPSF is organized by the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the UN DESA through the DPIDG in association with the UN Women (UN Entity for Gender Equality & the Empowerment of Women).
The Agenda of 2030 for Sustainable Development called for the innovative transformation and emphasized values and principles such as ‘leaving no one behind’, integration, partnerships, and universality which need to be put into action.
