Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Article 370

Mukherjee was a lifelong opponent of Article 370. The provision in the Indian constitution assigns an autonomous status to the state of Jammu & Kashmir, and he wrote extensively on this subject. He believed that the article acts as a deterrent to the country's cultural unification and that it is harmful to the integrity of the country, as he explained in a letter he wrote to Jawaharlal Nehru in 1953. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee has also spent his life trying to protest this. Those Indian citizens would be required to carry ID cards while it was something he thought unfair in a part of the country. He went to Jammu & Kashmir to protest this 'unfair' permit scheme, from where he was arrested for unlawfully intruding. He died a detainee at the age of 51 on 23 June 1953.
