Slurpee is probably the most popular frozen beverage in the world. The icy cold beverage is a common option for cooling off all summer long as July is known for its summer heat. The day is celebrated on the 11th of July and is known as 7-Eleven Day.

What is the history of National 7-Eleven Day?

The day was observed for the first time on 11 July 2002, when 7-Eleven observed its 75th birthday by giving consumers a free Slurpee. They give out free Slurpees on this day and since it become a tradition. 7-Eleven is an international American chain of convenience stores with headquarters in Dallas, Texas and Slurpee, their exclusive brand name for a carbonated frozen drink.

7-Eleven convenience store was introduced in 1927 under the name of the Southland Ice Company with the Totem logo so customers were able to 'tote em' their favorite products at home. Business extended its hours after 1947, from 7 a.m. By 11 P.M. and then the name changed to 7-Eleven.

What is the background of Slurpee?

Omar Knedlik invented the drink solely by accident in the late 1950s, when one day his soda fountain broke down. He put them in a freezer to keep his sodas cold and this led to the soda being slushy. Customers greatly enjoyed it, and it in effect, gave him the concept of making a machine that would freeze carbonated drinks. The slushy drink was renamed Icee, at the time of its creation.

7-Eleven made a licensing agreement to sell the product under a different name with The Icee Company in 1965 after it became famous. So 7-Eleven sold the product under the name Slurpee in 1966, in reference to the sound produced when drinking it. Bob Stanford, a 7-Eleven ad agency director, had coined the term 'Slurpee'.

By the spring of 1967, there was a Slurpee machine in every 7-Eleven store in the country. 7-Eleven will introduce eye-catching and not risky-names for its latest flavors to boost the Slurpee fanfare. Novelty names such as Sticky Icky, Gully Washer, Pink Fink, Moonshine, and Adults Only added to the growing flavour list.
