Coast Guard Day is also known as USCG Day or C.G. Day. Coast Guard Day 2020 is observed on 4th August every year. The Coast Guard Day is celebrated to honor the establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service in 1970, which is the forebear of the present Coast Guard. The day is celebrated to honour the courageous work of the service members of the Coast Guard.

What is the History of the Coast Guard Day? 

The United States Coast Guard is much older as it was established on 4th August 1790. It was set up by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. Earlier it was known as the Revenue Marine. Hamilton authorized the construction of 10 vessels that are known as Revenue Service cutters, which were intended to enforce the earliest United States tariff laws. Later, President Woodrow Wilson signed an act of Congress into law that combined the Revenue Marine with another agency known as the United States Life-Saving Service. The intention was to have a single entity responsible for maritime law enforcement and life-saving.

After this merger, it was christened as the United States Coast Guard in the year 1915. This was done was before the advent of computers, Global Positioning System (GPS) systems, or other electronic navigation aids. One of the many duties of U.S. Coast Guard was the maintenance of America’s navigation aids such as the operation of lighthouses along the coasts.

In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt and Congress transferred the operations of the United States Lighthouse Service to Coast Guard authority. Later, the Department of Commerce Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation was transferred to the auspices of the Coast Guard. This gave the US Coast Guard the authority of merchant marine operations. The US Coast Guard was then transferred to the newly formed Department of Transportation effective 1st April 1967. After the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001, the U.S. Coast Guard was transferred to the new U.S. Department of Homeland Security in 2003.
