On the 14th of December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed the observation of World Senior Citizens Day on 21 August every year. What are the measures taken by GoI for the Elderly in India?

Government of India has taken by GoI for the senior citizens in India are listed below:

Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP) by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment with an to improve the quality of life of older persons by providing basic amenities like shelter, food, medical care, and entertainment opportunities, etc.

Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment with an aim to provides aids and assistive living devices to senior citizens who belong to the BPL category who suffer from age-related disabilities such as low vision, hearing impairment, loss of teeth and locomotor disabilities.

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) under the Ministry of Rural Development runs the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) with the main objective to provide social assistance for poor households for the aged, widows, disabled, and in cases of death of the head of the house.

Varishtha Pension Bima Yojana (VPBY) which is run by the Ministry of Finance are social security schemes for senior citizens who are not intended to give an assured minimum pension on a guaranteed minimum return on the subscription amount.

Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PNVVY) is implemented with an aim to provide social security during old age. 

Vayoshreshtha Samman is conferred to eminent senior citizens and institutions under various categories for their contributions on the International day of older persons.
