World Heart Day was established in 1999, by the World Heart Federation (WHF) in association with the World Health Organization. World Heart Day has been observed since then, and WHF has continued to sponsor this annual event by collecting and distributing information by selecting a theme for the day every year.

What is the History of World Heart Day?

World Heart Day was established in the year 1999 by the World Heart Federation (WHF) in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). The idea for the origin of this day was conceived by Antoni Bayes de Luna, president of World Heart Federation (WHF) from 1997-1999. Earlier World Heart Day was originally celebrated on the last Sunday of September (until 2011) with the first celebration taking place on 24th of September 2000. As per the data in the early 2000s roughly around 17 million people worldwide died from cardiovascular diseases each year.
