What is the History of National Son's and Daughter's Day?
The history of National Son's and Daughter's Day was celebrated for the first time in 1988. The celebration was mentioned in a Nanaimo (British Columbia, Canada) Daily News article dated 12th August 1988. The founder of the National Son’s and Daughter’s Day is unknown.
An article on the 20th August 1944 of St. Joseph News-Press/Gazette stated that, in 1936, J Henry Dusenberry first initiated the observation of the idea of a Sons’ and Daughters’ Day. The thought occurred to him after hearing a child ask why there was no such occasion. The observation of the day was started in Missouri by Dusenberry. On this day, the parents placed a flower representing each of their children in a vase and put it in a prominent room in the house. But by the year 1945, the day was celebrated at 22 states with organizations participating in the event.
Later, organizations such as the Lions Club and women’s auxiliaries would hold Sons and Daughters Day in their municipalities. The celebration of the day changes from year to year. In 1972, Claude Pepper, a Congressman from Florida, submitted a request for the establishment of a Sons’ and Daughters’ Day on behalf of Georgia Paul of Del Rio, Texas. Both the House and the Senate did not sign a bill or joint resolution to declare the day.
