What is the history of National Rose Day?

Rose dates back as far as 600 BC and is probably the oldest known type of wine. In 600 BC, the Greek traders brought the start of the Provence wine industry. In the 14th Century, Rose from Province is considered prestigious, for kings and aristocrats.  In the Mid 1940s, Henry Behar, wine merchant, introduced Las Lanzas Rose wine from Portugal to American palates. Later in 1975, Sutter Home's White Zinfandel firmly placed roses in the wine racks of wine lovers across the country.

In 2014, Bodvar, House of Roses, a rosé house specializing in rose wines, founded National Rose Day. The day was designated to share people's love of the rose and give rose lovers a day to unite together and celebrate. The first celebration took place on June 14, 2014.

What is Rose wine?

Rose wine is made out of red grapes. It is usually much lighter in colour than red wine and darker than white wine. The pinkish colour of the rose wine depends on the time the grape skin stays in contact with the juice. This reduced grape skin contact gives rose a pink hue and lighter flavor than that of red wine. The process is also known as maceration.

There are a lot of varieties in rose wines. Some are sparkling or semi-sparkling with varying intensity of sweetness, smell, and dryness. The National rose day 2020 is celebrated in honour of the beautiful rose wine.
