Doctors' Day in India was established in 1991 by the Central Government to pay honour and respect Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. The National Doctors' day is celebrated on July 1 which was the birth and death anniversary of Dr Bidhan. He was born on 1st July 1882 and died on the same date, that is, 1st July 1962. A year before his death, Dr. Bidhan was honoured with Bharat Ratna on Feb 4, 1961, which is considered to be the highest civilian award in India.

He was elected twice as West Bengal's Chief minister, and remained in office for up to 14 years until his death in 1962. He was an Alumnus of University of Calcutta.
