International Translation Day is celebrated on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible Translator who is known as the patron saint of the translators. The celebrations of International Translation Day have been continuously promoted by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) ever since it was set up in 1953. The idea of an officially recognized International Translation Day was launched by FIT in the year 1991 to show solidarity of the translation community worldwide.

What is the History of International Translation Day?

The International Federation of Translators (FIT) was set up in 1953. In the year 1991 FIT launched the idea of celebrating International Translation Day for the recognition of the translation community worldwide. On 24th of May 2017, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring 30th of September as International Translation Day. The signatory countries of the Draft Resolution A/71/L.68 were Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Paraguay, Qatar, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Vietnam. Several other organizations advocating the resolution are International Association of Conference Interpreters, International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters, Red T, World Association of Sign Language Interpreters.
