On 12 December 1997, by the resolution of 52/149 the UN General Assembly (UNGA) came forward to signify 26 June as the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The day was selected significantly by the UNGA for two major reasons. Firstly, on 26 June 1945, the United Nations Charter was made to sign during the middle of World War II  which was the maiden international instrument requesting the UN members to respect and encourage human rights. The next reason is that the date 26 June 1987 saw the  United Nations Convention in opposition to Torture and Other brutal, Non-human, or Derogatory Treatment or Punishment.

The term 'torture' means any action which causes intolerable pain or suffering, which can be either physical or mental,  which is forcefully done on a person by another for needs like to acquire information, or to make someone deliberately accept a thing by forcing them, punishing the other for an act  that was done and judged upon grounds of  discrimination of any kind." - Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (1984, art. 1, para.1)
