Hindi Diwas is observed on the 14th of September every year. Hindi Diwas is observed to commemorate the adoption of Hindi language written in Devnagri script, as one of the two official languages of the Republic of India approved by the Constituent Assembly of India. Hindi Diwas is celebrated to emphasize the importance of Hindi language which is losing its importance in the country. The Hindi language is known to be the third most spoken language in the world. Hindi Diwas is a day to devote and express the relevance of the Hindi language in the country and across the world. Hindi Diwas is an annual day and it is indeed a very good approach to emphasize the importance of Hindi language.

What is the History of Hindi Diwas?

India is a country with various diversified cultures and languages. Although most of the states in India have their regional languages still Hindi language is the most spoken language in the country. In 1918 during a Hindi literature conference Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi urged to make Hindi the national language of India. Many people like Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt, and Seth Govind das made efforts for the same but the efforts brought results on the 50th birthday of Beohar Rajendra Simha on 14th of September 1949. The day was marked as the first Hindi Diwas (14th of September 1949), and the Hindi language was adopted as the official language of India by the Constitution. As mentioned in the article 343 of the Constitution of India, Hindi language written in Devnagri script is one of the two languages of India, English being the second one. 

Some facts and figures about the Hindi language

The Hindi language is considered one of the most spoken languages as it is spoken by over 250 million people keeping in view the huge population of Indians in as well as outside of the country. If we go through the census of 2011, inside the country itself the Hindi language is spoken by about 43.6 percent of the whole population of India. The Hindi language is also known to be the third most spoken language in the world.

How is Hindi Diwas Celebrated?

A lot of importance has been given to Hindi Diwas in India. Students are encouraged to increase the use of the Hindi language and learn about it. On this day, various Hindi literature activities are organized and students of schools and colleges are motivated to participate in various literature and cultural activities in the Hindi language. On the occasion of Hindi Diwas, Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan also organizes a function where the President of India presents awards to those who have made some major and influential contributions to the Hindi language and its use.

  • Awards in different categories for achieving the excellence in different fields related to the Hindi language has been conferred by the former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee Ji at a function in Vigyan Bhavan (New Delhi)

  • Various awards known as Rajbhasha Awards have been conferred to various government sectors viz, Ministries, Departments, PSUs and National Banks

  • In an order dated 25thof March 2015, The Ministry of Home Affairs has changed the names of two awards presented annually on Hindi diwas. The name of “Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puraskar” instituted in 1986 has been changed to “Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar” and the name of “Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya Gyan-Vigyan Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar” has been changed to “Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar”
