What is the History of Father's Day?

The celebration of Father's Day can be traced back to 1910. It is believed that the observation of the Father's Day was initiated by Mrs. Sanora Smart Dodd. Sanora, along with her five siblings were brought up by his father after their mother died in childbirth. Sanora's father did not remarry or place his children under the care of others. She initiated the Father's day after hearing a sermon about Mother's day by Anna Jarvis at Central Methodist Episcopal Church. Sanora approached the leaders and proposed to establish a day to honor fathers, which would mirror Mother's Day.

In the year 1913, Congress received a bill aiming at recognizing Father's Day. The bill was rejected in 1916 to have the day made official for fear that it would become just another commercialized holiday. Later in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson approved the idea to observe Father's Day. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge officially launched the Father's day.

In 1966, as men left their families to fight in World War II, the fathers' contribution to families was felt. In 1966, The United States President Lyndon B Johnson issued a proclamation designating Father's Day USA to be observed on the third Sunday in June. In the year 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national commemorative day and announced that the third Sunday in June would be Father's Day.
